Frequently Asked Questions

What do children learn?

We run a series of classes designed to teach your child how to safely use a variety of hand tools.  Each weeks class is focused on a particular tool/skill and over the weeks their skills are developed through continual practice.  Your child will work on a number of different projects over the term.

During our school holiday and Saturday programmes your child will work on a project that may take 1-3 sessions to complete.  Details of holiday programmes and Saturday classes can be found on the classes page.

What ages do you cater for?

Children aged 6-15 years can participate in Perth Kids Shed classes.  Please make sure you enroll your child in an age appropriate class.

How many children are in each class?

We have a maximum of 6 children in each class to provide your child with a more intimate and personalised experience.

Do parents/carers stay for the class?

We will make sure your child is so busy they won't know your gone!  Parents are asked not to stay, but if you have a very timid or nervous child you may stay for the first part of the class to settle them in. We ask that you do not interfere with the teaching of the class and allow your child to work on their project.
Please inform of us of any behavioral / learning needs when you enroll.

Perth Kids Shed is operated from a home workshop and there really isn't the space to have adults and children in the workshop.  We are located on the door step of the Swan Valley, so take this opportunity to go and explore!

My child is very advanced but is not yet 6, can I still enroll them?

Short answer - no.  Developmentally children under 6 are not ready to participate in classes like ours as they don't yet have the manual dexterity (or the patience!) to use a lot of the tools, nor to concentrate for the duration of the class.

Can I drop my child earlier / pick them up later than the class time?

We need to have time to set up and then pack up after the class.  Your child should arrive / leave no more than 10 minutes prior to, or after their classes.

How do I enroll?

All available classes are here on this website.  You can enroll by choosing a class and following the payment details.  If classes are not available please contact us and we will put you on a wait list.  No place is secure until full payment has been received. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions prior to enrolling your child in a class.

Can I change my booking?

If possible and within reason. We try to be as flexible as possible but sometimes we are not able to change your booking. Materials are prepared well before each class and if we can’t fill your child’s place in the class - no changes can be made.  If you want to change a class booking, please contact Tracey via email to see what can be done.

NO changes will be made to your child’s booking within 7 days of the class operating and all changes are at Perth Kids Shed’s discretion.  Change of mind will not be refunded.  Please read the terms and conditions before booking.

My child has a food allergy.  Is food offered in class?

Children are asked to not bring food to class.  Any after snacks (even after school) should be consumed before coming to the shed.  Please let us know on enrollment if your child has any allergies - food or otherwise.

Is my child going to make something good?

All children learn new skills at different rates.  We will guide your child through the projects, but we do not expect all children to have mastered all skills in such a short amount of time.  The important thing is your child is having a go and developing many varied skills along the way.

Please speak with Tracey if you have any concerns about your child's progress.

Where are the classes run?

Perth Kids Shed is located in Midvale in Tracey Laird's own workshop.  You can view the map on our home page.

My child has additional needs, can they still participate?

Perth Kids Shed aims to be as inclusive as possible to all children.  If your child has additional needs or if you are worried or have questions about the suitability of classes for your child, please contact Tracey PRIOR to booking in.  We will do our best to accommodate your child so they have a fun experience too.
